The old addage has caught up with me once again;

Just when I am feeling at home and settled here in Kuala Lumpur, a new opportunity comes knocking my door. I will be re-assigned down south to the small but highly industrialized Republic of Singapore - also known as City of Lions. It will not be a permanent change but I am looking at spending a year or so there. Not that I don't like it - actually I am excited and anticipating it altogether.

Looking back at my life in Malaysia for the last year and a half, it is good to see how much change has happened to me. In doing so, I get the feeling of fulfillment and contentment that I am going the right way. Below are tidbits and pieces of things that I have done in that span of time

1. I have become a full-pledged OFW/OCW - makabagong bayani daw sabi nila.

2. Been to offshore facility .. twice.. ill pass on the next wahahaha

3. Started out photograhy - trying this as an outlet for any creative juice that my brain might have

4. Bought my very first bike - something I longed for as a kid

5. Been able to travel to Bangkok, Miri, Langkawi, Genting, around Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya

6. Trekked to Sg.Pisang Falls, hiked Mt Pulag, Mt. Isarog, Mt. Talamitam - at least di zero sa hiking

7. Maintained playing weekly basketball. Joined 2 tournaments. 3rd placer on last one

8. Joined volleyball tournament, First time walang pinanalo. Second time, heart breaking lost naman

9. Tried swinging an actual golf club.

10. Increased my average pinfalls - 2006(118), 2007(120), 2008(126), 2009(134)

11. Been able to watch Ironman Triathlon.

12. Steamboat get together during birthdays.

All in all, its been a busy and enriching year and a half.

And so I am now looking forward to what tomorrow has to offer. One step at a time.

MELAKA – Malaysia’s Historic City

All the symptoms points to it, I was suffering yet again from Acute Displacement Deficiency syndrome. And so on a whim I decided I’m going to Melaka - me and my loyal partner. A mere 147km south of KL and 2 hours by bus, it is the perfect destination for a quick escapade.

I rolled my bike at 6:30am. It was still dark when I arrived at Puduraya Bus terminal. My ticket says I need to wait at platform 11.

The bus left 15 minutes late to my disappointment. I wanted to get there as early as possible but there’s nothing I can do with it. Tried to catch up some sleep. When the bus stopped I quickly checked my bike stowed on the bus compartment. It was still in one piece.

I towed my bike to get some breakfast at McDonald’s.

Unfolded my bike and I’m all set to go.

The adventure started right outside the bus station. Malaysia’s longest footbridge will be my first challenge.

The old Melaka city is located some 5km south of the terminal. Armed with a screen shot from Google maps, I started my trip to the historic city. In 5 minutes I was lost already.

Stopped in a mini boat pier to snap some pictures.

Some kayaker passing through. I later found out that there was a kayak marathon on-going =)

Knowing the general direction, I just pedaled on until I reached the Dutch square.

There I saw the Queen Victoria’s fountain, the old Christ Church built in 1753, Stadhuys, the old governor’s house turned into museum and the clock tower in the middle of the plaza.

I can only imagine how it was like during the 1700’s and 1800’s

Then the old governor’s house turned into museum. Too bad I couldn’t find a place to leave my bike. Didn’t have a bike lock. Maybe ill just check it out next time.

Moving on.. This attraction used to be in KL. Now its part of the tourist attractions in Melaka.

Nope that’s not the Eye on Malaysia. It’s a water wheel that was restored by the government.

This picture summarizes the rest of my day there - hot weather, beautiful places and tons of tourists.

This used to be part of a fort that was discovered by accident. Now they have restored the place.

Back in the olden days, forts are the main defense of a city. Can you imagine how long it takes to build this 3 meter thick walls.

And their primary long range weapons…

Next stop was this majestic galleon. Built after a sunken Portugese boat Flora Del Mar(sounds like telenovela?) It houses the Maritime Museum.

This time the counter lady was polite enough to allow me to leave my bike near the counter. Entrance fee was 3RM. Inside you can see stuffs they were able to salvage from the sunken ship.

It was turned into a museum where you can see and learn how it was like during the old days, when trading goods was the only method of commerce.

Inside I marveled how spacious it was.

They have all sorts of things.. even real guns and cannon balls.

On the way out this figure caught my attention.

Now I know where they copied Captain Jack Sparrow’s appearance. hehehe

On the other side of the ship was another museum designed with a boat crashing through the walls.

Took my bike and then crossed the street. I saw this colorful bus servicing the tourists. One word came to my mind.. aircon…

The tourists from the bus were all going to this towering structure... for 20RM, you can ride the Melaka Revolving tower.

This was the view from the top.. Melaka which is by no means a sleepy town.. it’s bustling with activities.

The A Famosa and St Paul’s church on top of the hill is supposed to be the highlight of my trip.. But I was just contented snapping pictures from below.

I am now having this love-hate relationship with my bike..

Next stop.. the Melaka River cruise

This 45 minute cruise will get you around melaka. A tour guide is also aboard to explain different things.. including how Sean Connery filmed some scenes for the movie Entrapment back in 98.

It cost 10RM… I tried talking to the manager if I can take my bike aboard.. tidak boleh! hehe they were very nice though to look after my bike near the counter..

Then off we go

By this time I was already exhausted.. but there is still one more place to go…(actually a lot more) but my one day itinerary will have to come to an end..

If you go to Melaka, you should not miss Jalan Hang Jebat..

More popularly known as Jonker street…

This is the place to buy your souvenirs and try out nyonya foods..

Some of th oldest chinese temples are also located nearby..

I was not in the mood for a food trip so I just treated my self for a very refreshing cendol.. after having one serving I was craving for more but I have to go. (made a mental note to order Chowking’s halo-halo special when I go back home)..

been a few times back that I have been lured into trying out golf, finally I got my chance today. getting out of office sharply at 5pm. I headed home quickly to change and to prepare my camera and my bike. the destination - Pandan Perdana Driving range. some 6km of flat pedaling south towards Cheras area.
back home, golf is a game for those on the upper echelon of society. it feels a bit awkward at first upon entering the place but i got over it quickly. here's a view of the driving range (the war zone)

this was going to be a very informal type of lesson. my purpose is just to experience holding the golf club and try out swinging. checking my body's reaction if this game is for me.. hmmmn we'll find out.. let's see how the experts do it... here's joni showing his wares

DIY cellphone map

"necessity is the mother of all inventions"

no doubt, i want a GPS unit. the sleek Garmin Edge 705 would be a superb companion on the road. but since i am still broke, i have to devise something to help me during my weekend road trips. let me list down my options;

Option 1: dive head first and buy the GPS on installement basis. Possible. but I promised myself not to indulge in this bad habit for the mean time(grin). the verdict - not feasible for now.
Option 2: the cheaper option, buy a secondhand PDA with GPS function. good idea. but then again, I am very happy with my dual-sim Samsung D780 so it will be redundant. and some more, i am sure that continuous GPS usage will deplete the PDA battery in no time. i wouldn't want to spend something which would give mediocre results. when time comes that i have the budget, i will rethink this option. but not for now.
Option 3: just be happy with the old school maps. hmnnnn during my last outing, i opened my map a few times and the folds stated to tear off. i will need to tape it off. beggars can't be choosers? live with it!! lols
Option 4: a wondeful idea came to mind. why not load digital maps to my existing handphone. PERFECT!

i googled - "map viewer for java phones". after several hit and miss, i grew tired.

next idea, maps are basically pictures. with that in mind, i grabbed map images from google maps, saved as JPEG and copied to my phone. after several tries, managed to get the best resolution that my phone's image viewer would accept(1600 x 1200). the result.. instant digital map!
i tried zooming in and out, panning up and down, side to side.. imagining i am actually navigating, hmnnn it works!

now next step is to grab as much map as i need. i will also have to devise an intuitive filenaming convention to make it easier to find the adjascent maps but thats piece of cake now.

Biking 02: Putrajaya 1st Dragon Boat Festival

i was itching the whole week for another road trip. and so when I learned that the 1st Putrajaya Dragon boat festival will be held over the weekend at Putrajaya Water Sports Complex, i immediately started plans on making the trip. here's where the folding bike comes really handy.. my itinerary will include a train ride from KL Sentral to Putrajaya via KLIA transit(ERL). with a regular bike, taking a train is almost automatically out of the option not unless you are willing to disassemble/reassemble your bike. thanks to to whoever designed folding bikes hehehe

Part 1 - the travel itinerary
destination: Putrajaya Water Sports Complex
distance: house to KL Sentral terminal (6.5km)
Putrajaya ERL station to Water Sports Complex (9km)
6:00am
wake up and take a quick bfast
6:50am
rolled my bike going to KL sentral. it is very familiar to me now as i am using the same route going to brickfields where i play basketball every weekends.
7:15am
reached KL Sentral, no sweat hehehe. before the trip, i researched online about ERL route. it is said there are 2 train services. KLIA Express which goes directly to KL International Airport and the other one is KLIA Transit which stops at 3 other stations including Putrajaya/Cyberjaya. bought a roundtrip ticket for 19RM. i was a bit worried on how they would react to me carrying a folded bike. the lady at the counter was polite enough to explain to me that the bike would have to go to the baggage compartment. oki, no problem as long as it reach there in one piece but as i was about to go inside, the manager on duty told me i can carry it with me on the coach as long as i seat at the back portion of the train. wooohooo!
7:35am
i asked directions where the platform for KLIA Transit was and the guard gave me directions. just head down using the escalator. after waiting for 5 mins, the train arrived. but oops, the logo says KLIA EXPRESS.. wtf! did i not make myself clear. hmnn confused i asked the other passengers and they said this particular train goes directly non-stop to KLIA. i left my bike in one corner, raced upstairs to ask the guard which train stops at Putrajaya, and in broken in english he managed to say it is the same train. (wait a minute)... digital clock says train will leave in 5 minutes. thinking that i have a roundtrip ticket anyway, i bit the bullet and got in. found a portion for luggage and sat next to my bike. a Malay guy in his 40s sat next to me, and since i was a bit doubtful, i asked him again. same answer - the train goes to KLIA non-stop. huhu!!! train leaves in 2 minutes. hauled my bike in one hand and got off. then luckily a porter came to collect the trolleys. i asked immediately if the train will stop at Putrajaya and in very good english heanswered "KLIA Express and KLIA Transit are now combined service". train leaves in 1 minute.. raced back in and found the same seat still vacant. talk about buzzer beater.(sigh) here's my bike sitting in one corner

7:41am
train left the station, stopping at Bandar Tasik Selatan and in exactly 23 minutes, i was in Putrajaya. rolled my bike outside, unfolded and i was ready to go. i took out my Putrajaya map which i bought the day before and oriented myself for my general direction. how i wish i can have the Garmin Edge 705(drooling) it will surely make travelling a LOT easier. oh well...

Part 2 - biking in Putrajaya
biking in putrajaya on a sunday morning is very easy. i almost have the road to myself. with the exception of maintenance guys watering the plants at the roadside. checking my route, i will be passing 3 bridges(Putrajaya id known for its world class structures and bridges). first stop is the ship looking, cable-suspended Seri Wawasan bridge

next stop is the Seri Saujana bridge which has parabolic arcs to support the structure.
third bridge is the Seri Gemilang which leads to Putrajaya Convention Center

Part 3 - Dragon Boat race
as i was biking towards the Water Sports Complex, i was already hearing drums beating. today is the final race day and i was immediately excited.
it was my first time to see a dragon boat race in actual and i only knew bits of info about this race.. boat is almost similar to a canoe with heads and tails designed as a dragon.
normally the team is composed of a drum beater

i just mixed with the crowd and snapped some photos. this the water sports complex stadium
this tower looks suspended in the air! a team from Macau doing stretching excercise..
not only physical preparations, mental training is very important in this sport specially in final stretches where you need to be mentally tough and focused to go faster albeit being tired. if in car races there is Nitro to boost your speed in the last 50 mters or so(fast and the furious?), in dragon boat race there is also an equivalent. this team from singapore is visualizing the race from start up to finish.
i can hear their coach instructing them to imagine they are on the final 100m - body tired but the race is close and everyone must push harder... harder paddling, not faster.. that's the key!

dragon boat race is almost similar to car drag racing (at least the events that i watched). the teams will paddle to the starting lane. around 500meters away. the finish line is located near the stands to give more drama. this team is paddling on the way to the starting line

upon reaching the final 100 meters, the drum beats will grow faster and faster with the paddlers pushing harder up to finish line. you have to be there to really feel the adrenaline rush (even while watching!). look at the following sequence, the boat at the bottom will overtake and will finish first place in this race.

it was really fun watching. too bad it is too hazy so i only got few clear shots. not to mentioned my kitlens will only zoom to 135mm =(

Part 4 - me and my bike

for this trip i bought my tripod hehehe i would never want to be left out in the photos. (kahit nakakapagod mag setup just for a few snaps)

for my lunch, i bought a 2 piece KFC chicken from rolling KFC-on-the-go and biked further from the race area. i found this quiet spot and enjoyed my lunch.
again a very nice trip.. looking forward to the next one already!

Biking 01: Test ride to KL Lookout Point Hulu Langat

here's my spanking new folding bike... a dahon speed p8 2009.. bought it at the authorised Dahon distributor near Bangsar Village...
i went for a test ride last sunday..
destination: KL Lookout Point Restaurant, Hulu Langat
distance: 12.6km
terrain: moderate climbs, hilly near the destination

I found my way even without a map, just stopping for brief moments check the road signs... road sign says im only 3km to my destination.. but by this time e pagod na ako and paakyat ang kalsada..
after much effort climbing the hill, i have to decide either to turn back or to push my bike upwards. i came to an area with a good overlooking view so i decided to stop there and take some pics then head back down. later on when i checked google maps, i was only around 1 km away.. sayang =( hehehe

here's the problem - i am hooked to mountaineering and im getting tired explaining to my girlfriend why am i so crazy about it.. the solution - bring her along! =) yes i know that's easier said than done.. well maybe.. read on.

see what i mean? first you have to be able to convince her to go with you even if it means she is the only female in the company. so how exactly do you do that?

my general rule is to make her feel comfortable no matter how difficult the the situation is. be honest. convincing her that the trek is easy may backfire when she finds it difficult.

when i heard the news that one of our former office mate died in a tragic car accident in Qatar last friday, i was saddened. we were not close, i only knew her because we are on the same department. just like me, she worked abroad to earn a living albeit thousand of miles away from home and loved ones. this accident could have happened to anyone. my condolences to her family. i know it will be very difficult to accept this. she was a bread winner. and so i offer a simple poem. its far from being perfect.... here it goes

Ironman Malaysia

After hearing that one of my ex-officemate will be part of this year's annual Malaysian Ironman event, I decided immediately to see it live. It will be held beautiful island of Langkawi. I have not yet decided on how to get there, I can take either by bus then ferry or take a budget airline. But what the heck, this is a good excuse to break my routine, so off i will go. You can check the official race website here. I browsed through the participants and counted at least 33 Pinoys including Everest summiteer Leo Oracion who will be competing under 35/39(yrs) group while my friend B will be in 25/29 category.

It will be my first time in Langkawi so you bet I'll take this chance to enjoy the place. I'm also hoping to get a nice souvenir item from Ironman. A shirt or cap will be really cool.

I'm starting to cross out the calendar now. =)

natural na sa mga OFW na katulad ko ang gumamit ng dalawang SIM card. isang roaming at isang local SIM. matagal ko din pinagtyagaan ang combination ng Nokia 1000 at Nokia 1200 ko.(1000 at 1200 pesos ko nabili hehe). ngayon at medyo nakaluwag na, naisipan kong humanap ng dual sim na celphone. nagkalat yung mga china brands/nokia clones at talagang mapapabilib ka sa mga features. may TV, 3G capable, Wifi etc etc. pero hindi naman talaga yun ang hanap ko. gusto ko ay simple, may warranty, pogi ang design, at di bulky. enter itong Samsung duos. sa ngayon Samsung pa lang ang "respectable" brand na nag labas ng dual sim hand set (SGH-D880 at SGH-D780). yung una ay slide type samantalang ung d780 ay candy bar design. mas pinili ko ung candy bar design dahil mas mura, dahil walang moving parts so logically mas matibay. so far eto ang mga comment ko dito;

+ walang naging issue sa pag handle ng dual sim coverage. pareho sila gumagana. nakaset as primary ung local sim ko(Maxis) at ung Globe ko naman ay secondary lang. since both network ay gumagana, pwede sya sabay tumanggap ng txt mesages.
+ wala akong reklamo sa battery life. 3 days bago ko nag charge ulit di pa drain yun.
+ sabi sa manual pag may kausap ako sa isang network at may tumawag sa pangalawang network, pwede ako mag switch at stand by muna yung isa pero di ko pa natry. madalang lang naman mangyayari yun kasi text lang talaga ang inaabangan ko galing as pinas.
- ok na sa akin alisin camera, tapos bawas presyo hehehe
- dami paikot ikot bago makapagsend message, pero nakakasanayan ko na din
+ pwede magshare ng common phonebook, so less hassle.

si Marwin ung janitor sa dati kong trabaho. di lang tagalinis, taga deliver pa ng order na lunch at saging. tuwing martes at huwebes me iaabot sya sayo ng patago.. card ng ending. basketball ending. bawal yun sa office kaya patago. numero ko 2-0 tyaka 8-5. di ko alam bakit, yun na lang ata ang natitirang bakante. walang nag-aalaga. di naman talaga ako mahilig tumaya pero nagkasubuan na kaya cge lang. regular na halos ang taya kasabay sa bayad ng lunch. pag biyernes advance na din yung laro sa linggo. di pa ganun ka talamak yun kasi may ibang mga lugar nga pati quarter score at halftime score e may ending pa din. unang buwan walang nangyari, pangalawa pangatlo ganun pa din.. puro haging... di ko cgurado pero sa pang apat na buwan yata, tumama ako ng tatlong sunod sunod na game. grandslam! ung 20 ko nagiging 1700 ayos. me pamalit na sa kinuhang tax sa akin ng gobyerno.

kanina tiningnan ko ung conference result ng PBA. kung tumaya ako mula nung umpisa nawalan na ako ng 480 petot di pa ako nananalo. tsk tsk

A survey reported that professionals who regularly changed their jobs are more confident and financially secure than their counterparts. To find out the truth we decided to have a conversation with some of our friends. We began with some professionals who had changed their jobs a year ago.

This is what one had to say:

"I started my career in a company and worked in the same company for 10 years. During this period I developed very good relations with my seniors, HoD and also with admin dept. This created a sense of security in my mind and I started loving my company. During this period I came across many job opportunities from other companies and also from foreign lands. But the sense of security was so deep rooted in my mind that I never bothered to even attend a walk-in-interview. Forget about thinking of going abroad. I watched many of my colleagues resign and join other companies on a higher salary and a higher position. Some even went abroad and are settled there.

Meanwhile I also saw some young engineers almost 5 years junior to me joined my company with same pay as what I was earning. It was then I was disturbed and started looking for alternatives. I had good relations with my HOD and also with administration dept so I decided to put up my case against this "injustice". Everybody showed sympathy to me but nobody took any action, all that they would say were "we will revise your scale in the next appraisal". I had faith in my company so I waited for the appraisal and to my shock I was given only an average increment the same was given to the new chaps too. The same story repeated the following year. It was then I decided to quit.

But leaving was not so easy. I had many of sleepless nights before I actually resigned. I had built a shell of "sense of security" around me and it was very difficult to break. Worse I had lost confidence that I would be able to adjust and perform in a different environment. But later I found out it is not so difficult to get adjusted to the new environment. I am happy now that I earn better and have a good position."

This is just an example. Many professionals we talked to had a similar experience.

WE CONCLUDE THAT WORKING IN ANY COMPANY FOR MORE THAN 7 YEARS HAVE FOLLOWING
DISADVANTAGES:

1. You are taken for granted by the company.

2. You get used to working in an environment which is unique to that company this makes you less confident for taking up new opportunities.

3. Personal growth is hampered as there is very little new to learn after 5-7 years.

4. You become complacent reducing your own market value.

5. The only benefit it offers is so called "security" (And that too is imaginary)

HERE ARE SOME BENEFITS OF CHANGING THE JOB REGULARLY:

1. You join the company satisfied with your needs ( pay and position ) and on your own terms.

2. Work in a different environment and learn to negotiate different problems and situations.

3. Often you get a chance to attend a new course/seminar thereby increasing your professional knowledge.

4. You are always conscious about your performance keeping your market value intact.

The professional companies do not operate on emotions. They are least bothered about your loyalty all they want is performance. You won't be awarded anything extraordinary for your loyalty. It is always performance that counts. If you are in a company serving for too long then the chances are you not one of the best performers because of the inevitable complacency.

Also such people presented with an opportunity of lifetime are incapable to grab it. It is impossible for these people to break their shell of "security" and grab the new opportunity. The situation is worse for the people who have worked for more than 15 years in only one company. They can't even dream of quitting their job - it is like fish out of water.

FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR JOB....

NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR COMPANY.....

I didn't say resign from your job right now but keep this in mind.

Last June, the "hiker" side got the better of me. So when my friend Mike asked me to join a trek to one of nearby falls.. join I did... I brought along my girlfriend who was visiting me that time(deserves a separate post).
We met with one of our avid hiker office mate together with his family and one expat from Holland who is now based here in Malaysia.

We started trekking around 10am. On the way we passed along this tunnel. You can either wade through the water or walk on the side ledges.

Trek is light and enjoyable and is flat all the way so you won't really spend much effort. The jungle setting combined with river crossing makes it an adventurous experience.

After around 45 minutes we were greeted by this view.

Last year, I was hiking once a month. This year? isa pa lang =( Now that I am working abroad, mas mahirap na mag hike. Who wont miss views like this?

or the feeling of being so tiny amidst mountains..

We're set to do another hike in one month's time. Me and my usual climb buddies. Tagal ko na nami-miss mamundok. Return to Pulag daw. Hopefully magwork out. Maulan dun this time of the year, kaya more than the trek, ung lamig ang kalaban talaga. Since walang time maghike dito, jogging at gym na lang last resort ko.

Our apartment do not have gym so I have to go to my friends condo para maki-gym. Poor? hehe

pulag.. here I come...

At home I bought two sets of dumbells and foldable na sit-ups board. Ok lang kahit nakakapagod.. kailangan ko to.. kesa namn mapagiwanan ako sa akyatan..
